Most people in the US realize that it is wise to file a tax return, for the simple reason that many are entitled to Tax relief in the form of a refund. It doesn’t matter if it is just a couple of hundred dollars or thousands, it is Tax relief, it means money back from Uncle Sam and it is worth filing a return to receive these funds back. Before you just go and spend this cash, it might be wise to stop and think. There are a number of smart ways of doing this.
* Put money into your credit card, doesn’t sound as good as the purchase of a flat screen TV, but it sure goes a long way to reducing high interest bearing credit card balances.
* Choose to open an IRA or if you already have one in place, use your Tax relief refund to pay toward your annual contribution.
* Buy stocks, stocks historically produce good return; a couple of hundred dollars could be the means of starting a good nest egg. Never believe you have too little to invest, this is simply not true. Ric Edelman says “Rich people start off as poor people.”
* Set up a mutual fund account, for rainy day money, the money will be available for emergencies and Ideally you should have stocked away 3 - 6 months of the value of your living expenses.
* Use your Tax relief refund to refinance your house.
* Add money to your mortgage repayment, rather there, than sitting in a savings account.
* A few hundred dollars invested in landscaping or a similar project will add value to your home.
